Position: Peer Mentor

Responsibilities:

bulletProvide personal assistance to students participating in the Mentoring Program;
bulletHelp in the development of skills necessary for mentee to succeed at WCU;
bulletGuide in developing realistic goals and expectations for mentee;
bulletMotivate mentee toward achieving academic excellence;
bulletServe as a role model; resource person, confidante and friend;
bulletRefer mentee to appropriate departments and/or staff;
bulletParticipate in orientation programs for effective mentoring;
bulletCommit to serve as mentor for at least one academic year;
bulletEncourage mentee to foster his/her own development by attending co-curricular programs;
bulletMeet with mentee at least once a month;
bulletEstablish standard times to meet with mentee;
bulletWork closely with Coordinator of Mentorship Program;
bulletMaintain confidentiality, except in case of emergency;
bulletSubmit summaries of meetings with mentee once a month.

Remuneration:

Requirements:

  1. Peer Mentors must have earned 24 credits or more prior to becoming a staff member with the OMA office.
  2. Peer Mentors must possess a cumulative GPA of at least a 2.5.
  3. Peer Mentors must be able to keep information she/he is provided with confidential.
  4. Peer Mentors must possess a positive attitude and an ability to work well with people from all backgrounds.
  5. Peer Mentors must be in good academic and judicial standing at WCU.
