Question # 1 "What's with the Bees?"
When Resident Director Rudy Tellez was hired to work at West Chester University in August of 1998, he was brainstorming of a "nickname" for the staff to have and for the residents to use as an identity when referring to the building. As he was unloading his belongings into Killinger Hall he noticed that there was a considerable amount of bees buzzing around the front lawn of the building. That was all that he needed! The name had been found! "Killinger Hall Killer Bees"! Over the years, staff members, and residents have contributed to the decoration of the front desk area with "Bee Decorations". Furthermore, they have proven to "bee" very much like the real Bees! Sticking together to handle projects, and taking on challenges that other individuals may turn down. Thus, the saying heard, "Way to Bee!"
Other residence hall staffs on campus have followed the lead of the "Killinger Bees" by establishing identities such as: Goshen Hall-"Giddy Up" Mustangs 1999, Ramsey Hall-"Ram Squad" 1999, Wayne Hall-"Sharks" 2000, Sanderson Hall-"Super Stars" 2000, Schmidt Hall-"Bulls" 2001, Tyson Hall-"Chickens" 2002, McCarthy Hall-"Rammettes" 2002, South Campus-"Ducks" 2003, University Hall- "Jesters" 2004, and Village-"Roos" 2004 .
Question # 2 "Is Killinger Hall Co-ed? Only for Honor Students? is it 24 Hours Quiet?"
Killinger Hall is a Co-ed building. However, it has some wings that are single sex. The first floor is evenly divided, the East Side is all male, and the West Side is all female. The Second Floor has an all male wing on 2 West, all female on 2 East, and Co-ed by room in 2 Center. The 3rd floor is co-ed by room.
The 3rd floor is assigned to individuals who are in the Honor Student Program, however, there are some rooms that may house first year students who are not in the program. If these students plan to retain their room for the following year, one of two things must take place... 1) Enroll in the Honors Program, or 2) Find a roommate who is in the Honors Program.
Killinger Hall is a 24 Hour Quiet building. Residents here respect the level of noise (if noise can be heard two doors down from your room, you are being too loud), this provides for a great environment for residents to study, work on projects or relax. Residents who would like to play musical instruments may do so in the basement Lounge or Laundry Room.
Killinger Hall has 3 floors and a basement. The building also has an elevator. As far as carts to help students move in or out of the building, currently there are none. RHA has been looking into purchasing some, maybe if there is enough interest a few carts may be purchased in the future.
Question # 4, How can I find out where the buildings are on campus, and what the prefixes mean on my schedule?
To make it convenient for you, we have the maps to North Campus and South Campus. Just click on the links and they will give you the information you need. Also, click on the Prefixes Link to find out what the codes of the buildings are.
Question # 5, How can I reserve the 60" TV to watch programs during the regular Academic Year?
Thanks to RHA, Killinger Hall has a very nice 60 inch TV set in the basement with a DVD and VCR! Sometimes residents want to watch their favorite TV shows or rent a movie, or bring their video games to the big screen. In order to avoid mix ups, we have a schedule book at the front desk. Just make sure that you sign up a time as to when you plan to use the TV and it will be "reserved" for you. Please keep in mind that if a Program is scheduled to be presented in the basement by a Resident Assistant or authorized student group, you may be asked to wait until the program is finished.
Question # 6 What happens if I get locked out of my room? How can I get a new key?
If you get locked out of your room, please go to the front desk, and request the "3rd extra Key", this key can be signed temporarily (5 minutes). You will need to provide ID before this key can be given to you. If the front desk is closed, then you will need to contact the RA on-duty. You can find out who this is by asking the security officer at the front lobby between 8PM-7AM. If you have lost your key, you will need to go to the Bursar's Office in the Bull Center, and pay $30 (cash, check or credit card accepted), then, bring back the receipt, and leave at the front desk to the attention of the Resident Director. Your request can not be processed until the receipt has been received by the Resident Director.
Question # 7 I have a bike, do many students use them on campus? Where can I store it?
West Chester University does have a number of students who use their bikes for transportation, as well as recreational purposes. (There is a nice Mountain Bike Trail in South Campus too!) There are bike racks where students can secure their bikes while in class. In Killinger, there is a room where bikes can be stored. You will need to provide your ID to the front desk and properly sign out the key. If you want to lock your bike outside, there is a bike rack in front of Killinger Hall.
Question # 8 "Who/What is the Bee Bear"?
The
"Bee Bear" pictured here
is part of the Killinger Staff. It is passed around at each staff weekly meeting
between the RA staff who gets to share a bit about themselves and how their week
was or will be. It gives everyone the opportunity to learn more about others.
Question # 9 Does the building have Sprinklers?
During the Summer of 2003 extensive work took place in Killinger Hall, and a fire protection sprinkler system was installed in the building. There is a sprinkler head in every room of the building and in the hallways.
Question # 10 Do all rooms have LAN Internet Access? Where are the Wireless Zones on campus?
Yes, during the Summer of 2003 all rooms in Killinger Hall received an upgrade for the LAN. There are two Ethernet jacks per room where students can connect to the Internet.
Also, if you have a wireless laptop, or PDA you may want to checkout the Wireless Zones on campus by clicking here.
