What we do?

For the past few years the Pennsylvania Tau Gamma has made a commitment to help and provide donations to an organization by the name of Camp Dream Catcher.

What is the Camp Dream Catcher?

Over eight years ago, a committee of concerned men and women came together to develop what is now known as Camp Dreamcatcher. The purpose of this very special summer camp is to provide children whose lives have been affected by AIDS/HIV with a place to get away, free from the concerns of their life and the rare chance to just be a kid!

Camp Dreamcatcher offers the children a safe, supportive and nurturing place to express their feelings of  fear, sadness and anger, with adults who understand, and with children who may share  their burdens. Held on  the grounds of a camp in southern Chester County, the children will enjoy the use of a lake and a creek, athletic  fields, swimming pool, tennis & basketball courts, miniature golf, an adventure challenge course, a  rock climbing wall, go-carts, an arts & crafts center, and an open-air pavilion for music and entertainment.

Through the years Camp Dreamcatcher has also developed special programs   that have become a vital part of its ongoing support of the children and their  families. The programs include: Children's Case Management, Counselor-In-Training (offered especially for the  children who have reached age 16 and no longer can attend camp as a camper), HIV/AIDS Education, and a  retreat for the parents/guardians of our campers, a teen retreat, and a counselor party. Also for the children,  Camp Dreamcatcher continues to incorporate activities for them throughout the winter months.

During the week of August 22nd - 28th, 2004, Camp Dreamcatcher welcomed 148 campers (ages 5-15), and 5 Counselors in Training (aged 16) for an action packed week of camp held on the grounds of Camp Saginaw in southern Chester County.  All of the kids enjoyed swimming, basketball, paddle boating, miniature golfing, an adventure challenge course, go-cart racing, arts/crafts, a John Flynn concert, Native American ceremonies and our annual talent show and dance.  In addition, the kids and counselors participated in therapeutic groups including music therapy, movement therapy, guided imagery, yoga and massage.  The teen program included educational groups on drugs/alcohol, HIV/AIDS, relationships, teenage depression, body image and sexual assault prevention.  The 11-13 year-old campers participated in our puberty education program which included discussions on relationships, body changes, body image and peer pressure.

A total of over 100 full-time and part-time counselors, medical  and professional staff volunteered their time, patience  and energy to make the week an unforgettable one for everyone involved.  My deepest appreciation goes out to all of   these wonderful folks!!
