Student Organizations
Feel free to review the list of frequently asked questions. For face-to-face personal instruction on any of these topics, arrange to speak with a Leadership Consultant or visit the Leadership Resource Center in 218 Sykes.
Cost
Each approved student organization at West Chester University may host one (1) website on the University's server at no cost. A generic domain name will be provided by the University (such as http://iws.wcupa.edu/yourorganization).

Domain Names
If you wish to have your own unique domain name (such as www.YourOrganization.com) then you must purchase it separately from a third-party domain name reseller. However, a unique domain name is not mandatory to set up a new website.

Editing
The editor you use to create or update the content and design of your website is at your discretion. You can hand-code, hire a website developer, or use a third-party HTML editing program such as Adobe Dreamweaver. The Leadership Resource Center has Adobe Dreamweaver available for student organizations to edit their websites.

Transfer Files/FTP
After you create or update the content and design of your website, you will save those files on your local computer. Then, you will have to transfer those files to the University's server via a File Transfer Protocol (FTP) program. For detailed instructions on transfering files, refer to Transfering Files via FTP.

Ethics
Photographs and content should be used appropriately. If you use a photo that's not yours you should make sure you're allowed to use it or cite the source. If you take your own photographs you do not have to cite. It's never a bad idea to ask permission. Only professional photographs and content may be posted on student organization websites because those files are hosted on the University's server.

What is FTP?
FTP is an acronym for File Transfer Protocol. It functions to transfer files from one computer to another computer or server. You can use FTP in a web browser, command line prompt, or in a program. You can think of FTP as the bridge between the file you save on your computer and the University's server where you want to upload file to be displayed publicly on the Internet. To upload your files to the University's server, use a third-party FTP program to upload and download files from your computer to the server. There are many different FTP programs available, such as FileZilla. FileZilla is a free program. Adobe Dreamweaver also has a built-in FTP program. The Leadership Resource Center has Adobe Dreamweaver available for student organizations to edit their websites.

Using FTP
After you download and open FileZilla, you will see four text boxes (Host, Username, Password, and Port). [Note: These same text boxes can be found on Adobe Dreamweaver by navigating from "Site > Manage Sites > New (FTP)".] On FileZilla, enter the complete URL in the Host box, but start with "ftp" instead of "http". Enter PASSHE\75xx00000 in the Username box, where xx000000 is your student ID number. Enter your student password in the Password box. You normally do not need to enter any text in the Port box. Leave it blank. An example of this information entered correctly will look similar to the following:

Host: ftp://iws.wcupa.edu/iws/yourorganization
Username: PASSHE\75XX123456
Password: ••••••••
Port:

When you enter all this information correctly and click "Quickconnect", some lines of text will appear and you should see your folders and files appear in the Remote Site box. The Remote Site box contains the folders and files that are hosted on the University's server. The Local Site box contains the folders and files that are hosted on your personal computer.
